It’s funny how the voices in our head work. You can be filled with confidence, surrounded
by support, and covered with unexpectedly great compliments and then… that ONE
word. One. That’s all it takes. One word of criticism and all other words are
erased. It doesn’t even really have to
be a harsh word. One question that makes
you question, not just that one thing, but everything …because that’s how we
are wired. You’d think that by the time
you reach a “certain age” or a “certain level” in your professional life these
distractions and doubt would just slide off.
But alas, (insert sigh) that does not seem to be the case.
Here is the one thing that I have learned though –
Questioning is fine, doubting is fine, reexamining is fine. Stopping is NOT fine. Being paralyzed by the fear of what other
people think is NOT fine.
Striving for perfection is good, and if we’re honest with
ourselves, that is exactly where we get hung up. Perfection, after all, is unattainable. Only Jesus Christ and your mother (as she
would have you believe) have any chance at being perfect.
So, go. Enjoy the
adventure. Not every day will be better
than the one before but it won’t take long before you can look back and see how
far you’ve already traveled. When
critics sound out your every fault, (and they will) or try to distract you from
your path, take a moment to listen with an open heart and mind – there may very
well be a lesson to learn, but, and this is the important bit - DON’T
STOP! There are great things ahead for you. The journey IS the prize.
